Singing bowls!!

Apart from relaxing yesterday, I very nearly fell asleep to the sound of singing bowls. Did you know that they could sing – and beautifully too?I’m referring to Tibetan Singing Bowls, of course. (But if you tried really hard you might get a bowl in your kitchen to at least hum…)

I dragged ming (for she was less enthusiastic than I) to a session where we lay down on mattresses and listened to some singing bowls. The person in charge of playing the bowls wanted us to imagine that we were on a boat at sea. I immediately got seasick.

However, once she actually stopped talking, I found that it was very soothing to listen to the different harmonies and overtones of these magnificent bowls. In fact, I could – quite literally – feel myself slipping into the vortex of sleep when some kind of chiming (her mobile phone no less!) wrenched me back from the brink.

I felt very lethargic and rested; harmonious even - after this session with the bowls.

One thing that interested me was to find out that certain hospitals use Crystal Singing Bowls as therapy for patients with nerve and pain problems, or with those who are nervous wrecks.

In my parallel universe, I can just imagine how the soothing effects of are used: in school assemblies to calm down students; before operations to soothe patients; in dentist surgeries; and in the Oval offices of world leaders whenever they get the urge to press that red button. Instead of flicking the swtich, they all lie down and listen to the rich tones of the singing bowls and instead of going off to bomb each other, they start sending love messages and comfort food to each other…

Eating Snakes, Snakes Eating

Today I decided to change my snakes’ habitat.  I put my two snakes, Shy Boy and Sly Boy in a white cup, then emptied everything out of their bucket.

I then went up to the garden and put a shovelful of soil in the bottom and stomped to pack it down.  Then I went over to my sand box and looked for slugs around the outside.  I found quite a few, and some worms.

Then I went to the water barrel and moistened the soil.  The slugs I dampened and put in a pile inside the bucket.  I pulled some grass and put it in the bucket.  Then I went over to my snakes and put them in the bucket with their piece of bark.

I had noticed that they looked kind of empty so I decided to search for some slugs, since previously it had been too dry.  I sat and watched them.  Sly Boy the not so shy started slithering around.  He stopped.  There was a slug right in front of him.  He sort of looked at it and then followed it while smelling/tasting it with his tongue.  Then he started to swallow it head first.  His mouth was able to become quite wide.

After swallowing it and letting it slide down his throat he slithered away into a ball soaking up the sun.  Meanwhile this whole time Shy Boy was under his bark.  He then came sliding out from underneath and slithered around.  I wondered if he would also eat.  So I picked up a wandering slug and dropped it in front of him.  He immediately recoiled, scared.  The he loosened up and followed it around as the slug crawled away.

Then, as the slug crawled before him he smelled it–making sure it was a slug.  The he started to swallow it sideways, rotating it back end first.  His jaws began to gulp and swallow.  It went down.  I could see it slide behind his head down his throat.  It was so amazing watching a snake eat.  They are so flexible.

The Shy Boy slid over to his friend and they entwined themselves together while they rested, soaking up the sun.

Ripple returns?

Since the robins’ return there has been one noticeably smaller, delicate  robin who is much less skittish than the others.  She flies into the plum tree with me 15 feet away.  She stays put on the lawn even if I walk past 10 feet away.

She seems to listen if you talk.  I think, we think, she may be Ripple.  If so, she went with the other robins in the fall, lived through the winter and flew all the way back.  No mean feat for a hand-reared robin.

As we were driving up this property, we saw a black snake slithered across the road into the brush..When we passed it and surrounded the next curve, there was another black snake (atleast 3 ft) in the road sunning..Kristie wanted to pick it up and move it but i had other ideas like "turning around"..To many snakes in one area!!
